Sight Singing School Books Part A, B, C, and D

Sight Singing School is a sight singing program developed by Mark O’Leary for use with Young Voices of Melbourne which is now available to everyone. Developed over 23 years this program has proven to be effective in teaching good sight singing skills to hundreds of young singers.

Recently presented with the President's Award at the 2014 eLearning Industry Association Awards, we are very proud to have our work in this area recognised by the broader eLearning community.

In the four part Sight Singing School books there more than 400 carefully sequenced sight singing examples. Each part consists of a number of units with each focusing on a new melodic or rhythmic element. New elements have many practice examples at each level to assist with learning. Pitch elements are named in the contents and titles using sol-fa, so that d r m f s l t d’ correspond with the 8 notes of the major scale. I recommend singing the songs in sol-fa (moveable do) as the best means of learning sight singing, however, other methods also suit this program. Words are provided for some songs in the collection. Best results will be achieved by studying this program under the guidance of a teacher, but students can do much on their own to make good progress, especially if they follow our suggested practice sequence and note the information on getting started for beginners, including charts of rhythm syllables and sol-fa handsigns, which are provided at the end of each book. The exercises provided at the end of each book are designed to make it

easier to sing each song by putting the song into the context of common scale, chord and interval patterns. There is a link to recommended exercises to practise at the start of each unit, and practice of these is strongly advised for the best progress.

Sight Singing School can be used by individuals working at their own pace through the examples or by groups learning together to improve their sight singing and aural skills. Only very basic explanations of music theory elements such as clefs, bars, time signatures and key signatures are included in the Sight Singing School books, and at This information is easily acquired from teachers or other resources. Key signatures up to four sharps and flats are used at random in this method. If using sol-fa, all key signatures are just as easy to sing from as the others.

The units in Sight Singing School PART A can be introduced in a different order to that suggested, for example units 8 and 9 can be completed after unit 5. Units 3 and 4 can be omitted completely if desired but are useful for some extra interval reinforcement. All units, however, should be completed before moving on to PART B.
